Who are sworn language translators? People working in the field of translation, which has now been recognized professionally. This requires them to be more professional. But everything is also followed by an increase in fee.
In order to become a sworn translator, there are some requirements to be prepared. First of all, you must file an application with the Governor, enclose photocopies of recent diploma, curriculum vitae, and other requirements (e.g.photocopies of ID Card, photograph, etc.). In addition, we must also enclose samples of translation.
The next process, if approved by the government, we must take a test. This test is related to the translation world. Where it will put our translation skills to the test. We will be asked to translate more than 1,000 words.
If we pass the test, we will be issued a certificate. Later, we will also undergo the oath ceremony led by the Government of Jakarta Special Capital Region. After being sworn in, we will officially become a sworn translator.
It means that we can translate official documents. Why do official documents require a sworn translator? It is because his/her competence to translate documents in conformance with the original has been recognized by the local government. So when processing government-related papers, there will be no more issues.
Then, how would the government officials know if the documents have been translated by a sworn translator? So on every page of the translated documents, the sworn translator must sign it and affix the official seal. This also serves as a proof that the documents have been translated by the expert.
Should there be any issue with the resulting translation in the future, the translator can then be prosecuted. For example, the relevant translator may be required to give compensation or removed from office as a sworn translator.
Then, how about other non-official documents? For example novels, abstracts? Ordinary translators can translate them. So there is no need to deal with sworn translators.
Furthermore, the rates of sworn translators are more expensive than those of ordinary translators. How come? Remember, the process to be sworn in by the Government takes a long time and requires a great deal of sacrifice. So do not be surprised if the rates are expensive.
Sworn translators are in the same position as doctors or lawyers. Namely, people working in a particular field of specialization. Both doctors and lawyers are also sworn in before entering the professional world. Likewise, sworn translators are also sworn in.
Unfortunately, since 2012, the sworn language translator qualification test is no longer held. So, in order to be recognized professionally, it is only certification left now.
Why could it happen? It is unknown why the government no longer holds the sworn translator qualification test. Instead, there is a certification authority, i.e. an institution that procures certification for professional translators.
The institution in charge thereof is the Indonesian Association of Translators or Himpunan Penerjemah Indonesia (HPI). It is recognized by the Federation International des Traducteurs (FIT) or the International Federation of Translators.
It is HPI that later reserves the right to hold the translator qualification test. Subsequently the same institution also reserves the right to determine whether the translators taking the test can obtain a certificate or not.
Upon passing the test, getting a certificate won't make us flooded with jobs. We must be clever in networking so that our business runs smoothly. It's just that one of the advantages of becoming a certified translator is the wider scope of documents to be translated.
